America's Allies and Enemies in the Middle East: 1939-2013

This map tries to break down US relations with Middle Eastern countries into the "with us" (blue) or "against us" (red) dichotomy so popular during the Cold War and the War on Terror. On occasion, though, purple was necessary for more ambiguous relationships, while the red and blue stripes show countries divided, usually by a civil war in which the US supported one side. Symbols show when major realignments were the result of invasions (the tank), coups (the gun), treaties or diplomatic decisions (the pen), elections (the check), other peaceful transfers of power (the weird baton thingy) or popular uprisings (the protestor). from www.midafternoonmap.com
